詞義被誤解的字#

以下幾個 u 開頭的字常被「直覺式」誤用。

• unique：是「獨一無二、無可比擬」；不能 more unique、most unique、even more unique
• unknown：嚴格上沒有東西完全 unknown——至少其董事會成員會知道；通常 little-known 才是想表達的
• untimely death：什麼時候死才叫 timely？陳腔濫調
• utilize：嚴格指「將原本不為此設計之物善加利用」（如用衣架修車）；單純表「使用」用 use

容易混淆的近義字#

句法陷阱#

unilateral / bilateral / multilateral 多半冗#

• 多餘：Bilateral trade talks between Britain and Japan（兩國之間貿易談判本就是雙邊）
• 簡：Trade talks between Britain and Japan

unless and until#

擇一即可，不必並用。

unlike 必須對等比較#

unlike 用作介詞時，所比較的兩物必須同類。

• 錯：Unlike the proposal by Rep. Albert Gore, the President is not putting forth a blueprint…（拿提案比總統）
• 對：Unlike the proposal by Rep. Albert Gore, the President’s plan does not put forth a blueprint…

unlike + 副詞片語#

unlike 應接名詞、代名詞或動名詞：

• 錯：unlike at previous sessions
• 對：unlike previous sessions 或 as was not the case at previous sessions

until / till / ’til / ’till#

只有 until 與 till 是合法且可互換的。

’til 與 ’till 都是錯的（且屬不入流）。

高頻拼字陷阱#

以下幾個是布萊森點名的常被誤拼字。

• Uffizi Gallery（佛羅倫斯）：注意 -ffi-
• ukulele：是 uku-，不是 uke-
• Ullswater：英國湖區的湖，是 Ull-，不是 Uls-
• Uluru（澳洲艾爾斯岩的正式名）：發音 “Oo-luh-roo”；屬於 Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park；旁邊的度假村是 Yulara

up 的冗用#

動詞 + up 慣用語裡，up 常常是「順便搭便車」的冗字。

• ate up → ate
• tighten up the rules → tighten the rules
• lift up their interest rates → lift…

但有些情況屬慣用，無法刪：look up a word、dig up facts、move up in our careers。

upsurge 雖被字典接受，但通常與 surge 同義；多此一字。

冗詞與重複#

寫作時最常見的「不小心說兩次」問題：

例：

• The usual procedure normally involved…（usual + normally 同義）
• Customarily, such freezes are usually imposed…（customarily + usually 同義）

兩例都應刪去其一。
