名稱拼字陷阱#

拼錯國家領導人或公眾人物姓名是新聞寫作中最不可饒恕的低級錯誤之一。

• Khrushchev, Nikita：前蘇聯領導人。注意姓氏中有三個 h（Khrushchev）
• Kerrey vs. Kerry：兩位民主黨參議員，皆生於 1943 年
  • Bob Kerrey：內布拉斯加州前州長與參議員
  • John Kerry：麻州前副州長、麻州參議員
• Katharine’s Docks, St.（倫敦）：注意 Katharine 而非 Catherine
• Kingsford-Smith（雪梨機場名，有連字號）但 Sir Charles Kingsford Smith（飛行員本人姓名，無連字號）
• Kmart：店家名，正式為 Kmart Corporation
• Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath：注意 the Order of the Bath 第二個 the

容易混淆的近義字#

北歐貨幣#

Scandinavia 諸國貨幣名稱經常被張冠李戴。

倫敦 The Times 曾出現 Sweden devalues kroner by 10 percent 之誤——瑞典用的是 krona / kronor。

• Krugerrand：南非金幣（投資工具，非流通貨幣），注意 -rr-

詞義被誤解的字#

• kudos：希臘語，意指名望榮譽，為單數；不存在 one kudo
  • 正：the kudos that was his due
  • 誤：the kudos that were his due
• knot：本義即「海里／小時」，已含時間概念；nine knots an hour 等於說「九海里每小時每小時」。改 nine knots 或 nine nautical miles an hour
• koala bears：永遠是錯。無尾熊是有袋類，與熊毫無關係，直接稱 koalas
• kith and kin：kin 是親屬；kith 是親屬與熟人。單獨用都顯古老，併用則陳腔濫調

句法陷阱：kind 與指代一致#

kind / kinds 與其搭配的指示詞、動詞、名詞單複數須一致（grammarian 稱此為 concord）。

• 對：This is the kind of number…
• 對：Those are the kinds of numbers…
• 不太對（連莎士比亞都犯）：These kind of knaves…（《李爾王》）

拼字小提醒#

• lackadaisical（無精打采）：是 lacka-，不是 lacks-（雖此字屬 L，但與 K 章拼字陷阱風格相同）
• kindergarten 但 kindergartner（幼稚園學童），不是 kindergartener
