詞義被誤解的字#
以下幾個字常被誤用，正確含義其實相當特定。
- gambit：是「含戰略性犧牲的開局」（西洋棋出身），不是任何招數；opening gambit 又是冗詞，因為 gambit 本就是 opening
- gamut：源自音階範圍，現指「完整的一系列」；應從一端跑到另一端（A to Z）才對
- gauntlet：兩種典故合流——「丟下手套挑戰」（throw down the gauntlet）與「列隊鞭打」（run the gantlet/gauntlet）。雖傳統上二者拼法不同，今日字典多接受 gauntlet 為通用拼法
- gender：原為文法術語；十九世紀才被拿來當 sex 的婉辭。多數權威認為這種「過於拘謹」的用法已過時
- gourmand：要謹慎使用，可能含「貪吃」的貶義；要稱讚美食家請改 gourmet、gastronome 或 epicure
- graffiti：是複數，單數是 graffito；雖戰役大概打不贏，仍宜寫 There were graffiti…
- growth：意指擴張。經濟「停滯成長」、「負成長」邏輯上自相矛盾——若在縮減或停滯，就不該用 growth
fulsome 與 gild the lily（容易陷入的陳腔）#
雖然這兩條在 F 章，但思路相同：
- gild the lily：莎士比亞《約翰王》（King John）原文是 “To gild refined gold, to paint the lily…"；常被誤引為 gild the lily，且本身已成陳腔
- gilding the lily 真要表達「畫蛇添足」，原典也未如此說
容易混淆的近義字#

拼字陷阱#
以下都是常被誤拼的字。
- gerrymander：源自麻州州長 Elbridge Gerry。Gerry 本人姓名首字 G 為硬音（如 gust），但 gerrymander 普遍唸軟 g（如 jerry）
- ghettos：複數是 -os，不是 -oes
- grandiloquence：是 grand-，不是 grand-eloquence
- grievous：常被誤拼為 grievious
- guttural：是 -tur-，不是 -ter-
- Häagen-Dazs：注意 ä 與 zs
動名詞（gerunds）的兩個常見錯誤#
Gerund 是「動詞當名詞用」，例如 I don’t like dancing、Cooking is an art。
1. 多餘的冠詞與介詞#
- 累贅：the valuing of the paintings could take several weeks
- 簡潔：valuing the paintings could take several weeks
2. 用所有格修飾 gerund#
- 較好：They objected to his coming.
- 較好：little hope of Smith’s gaining admittance…
- 不夠正式：They objected to him coming.
福勒（Fowler）原本堅持只能用所有格（稱誤用為 fused participle），但今日多數權威認為過於嚴苛。普通用法可彈性，正式寫作仍偏好所有格。
冗詞#
- greater London area：直接寫 greater London 或 the London area
- 同理 opening gambit、gilding the lily、runs the gamut 等慣用表達應節制使用
經濟學術語#
- gross domestic product (GDP)：本國境內生產，不含海外收益
- gross national product (GNP)：本國國民生產，含海外收益
- 一般文章中提及兩者差別時，應為讀者作說明
專有名詞地理糾錯#
多個 G 開頭地名共用相似拼法，極易混淆。
- George Town / Georgetown：開曼群島首府、馬來西亞檳城是 George Town；其他（蓋亞那首都、華盛頓特區地名與大學）是 Georgetown
- Granada / Grenada：西班牙古城 / 加勒比島國，首都 St. George’s
- Guadalupe / Guadeloupe：加勒比海法屬群島為 Guadeloupe；其他幾乎都拼 Guadalupe
- Guangdong / Guangzhou：中國廣東省（前 Kwangtung）／ 省會廣州（前 Canton）
- Guiana / Guyana：英屬蓋亞那 → 今 Guyana；荷屬蓋亞那 → 今 Suriname；法屬蓋亞那（仍稱 French Guiana）
- Guinea / Guinea-Bissau / Equatorial Guinea：西非三國，分別前法屬／葡屬／西屬
- The Guardian：1960 年代遷至倫敦後即更名，不再叫 Manchester Guardian
使用「文法錯誤」一詞的爭議#
有些人認為「grammatical error」自相矛盾——東西若已 grammatical 就不能 erroneous。布萊森指出：grammatical 的主要含義是「屬於文法的」，所以「文法錯誤」是合理的表達，且早已流通。
