單複數陷阱：bacteria#
bacteria 是複數，單數形是 bacterium。
- 錯誤：
Each bacteria is... - 正確：
Each bacterium is...或The bacteria are...
另一個常見錯誤是把 bacteria 與 viruses 混為一談：
- bacteria（細菌）：單細胞生物，能獨立繁殖
- viruses（病毒）：體積遠小於細菌，必須侵入活細胞才能複製，並非獨立生物

barbecue 才是正確拼法。寫成 barbeque 或 bar-b-q 都不入流。
- beleaguered：是 -ured，但要寫對 beleagu-，不要寫 beleagured（注意中間 -ue-）
- bellwether：是 -wether（被閹的公羊），不是 -weather
- besiege：是 -ie-，不是 -ei-
- bouillabaisse：是 -illa-，不是 -illi-
- Apennines（亞平寧）、Britannia（不列顛）：注意專屬拼法
常見冗詞與贅言#
布萊森對「廢話偵測」極為敏銳，以下都屬無謂的拉長。
- basically：幾乎一律可刪
- on a day-to-day basis：直接寫 daily
- be + -ing 分詞：will be joining 不如 will join 簡潔
- prior to：除非你願意把 after 改成 posterior to，否則就用 before
- bimonthly / biweekly：語意模稜兩可，明說 every two months / twice a month 更清楚
- blueprint（隱喻）：被嚴重濫用；況且 blueprint 是已完成的設計圖，不是初稿
- bottleneck：是隱喻就會脆斷，不存在 worldwide bottleneck 或 growing bottleneck 這種事
詞義被誤解的字#
- begging the question：嚴格指「以待證之事為證」的邏輯謬誤；現多被誤用為「引出問題」、「迴避問題」。布萊森認為傳統用法的堅守，已淪為對迂腐的偏袒
- bereft：是「被剝奪」，不是「缺乏」。寡婦 bereft of a husband；老處女不是
- besides：意思是「此外、還有」，不是「除此之外、不算」（後者該用 other than）
- burgeon：是「萌芽、初生」，不是「擴張、繁榮」。可形容神童的 burgeoning talent，但不能說 Cairo 的 ever-burgeoning population
句法與代名詞陷阱#
between you and I 永遠是錯的。
評論家 John Simon 形容它是「文法錯誤中粗鄙絕頂的一個」。介系詞之後須用受格，跟我們不會說 give that book to I 是同一個道理：
- 正確：between you and me
- 同樣錯誤：the children of he and the others（應為 of him）
關於 between vs. among：
- 過去說 between 限兩者、among 三者以上，並不夠用
- 較合邏輯的劃分：between 用於相互交涉（a treaty between A, B, and C），among 用於集體關係（trade talks among EU members）
- between 30 to 40 percent 是錯的：要嘛 between 30 and 40，要嘛 from 30 to 40
關於 but 後接代名詞：
- 句尾用受格永遠安全：Nobody knew but her
- 句中通常用主格：No one but he had seen it
關於 both：
- 不能用於三者以上：both in speech, deed, and dress 應刪 both
- they both went to the same school, Charterhouse 中 both 是冗字
- a supermarket on both sides 暗示同一店橫跨馬路；應為 on each side 或 supermarkets on both sides
關於 both…and / not only…but also / either…or / neither…nor：
- 屬「相關連接詞」（correlative conjunctions），須連接文法平行的成分
- 錯：He was both deaf to argument and entreaty（形容詞配名詞）
- 對：He was deaf to both argument and entreaty（兩個名詞）
專有名詞與小知識#
- Big Ben：嚴格指國會大鐘的「大時鐘鐘體」，不是鐘面；觀光客只能聽到，看不到 Big Ben
- British Guiana：南美 Guyana 的舊名
- Burma / Myanmar：書外多數權威仍偏好 Burma，Myanmar 主要為該國政府使用
- BSE：bovine spongiform encephalopathy 的縮寫，俗稱狂牛症（mad cow disease）
- buenos días（早安）但 buenas noches（晚安）、buenas tardes（午安）：陽性陰性形容詞分用
- buoy：發音是 boy，不是 boo-ee；除非你也把 buoyant 唸成 boo-ee-ant
